TREND ALERT: Selfie Vacations

It has been two years since the Oxford Dictionary named the term “selfie” their “Word of the Year,” but the expression is far from losing its popularity.

Now it’s making an impression on world travel. The new trend in tourism this summer is the concept of selfie contests and promotions.

Vacation industry companies like hotels, resorts, and travel websites – are involving themselves in the selfie movement by encouraging tourists to take selfies using their scene and hashtags for a chance to win prizes.

Companies all over the globe are hopping on the bandwagon – from the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa in California, to Kimpton Hotels across the US, to The Mandarin Hotel in Paris, La Concha Renaissance in San Juan, to the 1888 Hotel in Sydney, The Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens, and Cheaptickets.com.

Prizes and perks include vacation packages and credits, free stays, future upgrades, gift cards, custom framing for your selfies, and your own SelfiePal stick! Kimpton Hotels are even loaning out these selfie sticks to inspire involvement in participants.

Some locations, such as the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa in California, offer a selfie stick along with a map of “selfie spots” around the resort.

It’s a win-win-win scenario – tourists have a chance to win prizes whilst posting and sharing their shots from the must-see sites at their destination, companies benefit by gaining free advertising, and fellow tourists are relieved of their duty of taking photos for strangers.

Indulge in sharing your travels this summer – your vacation site just might reward you!
